Errol Copilevitz is the senior partner in the law firm of Copilevitz & Canter, LLC, which has its primary office in Kansas City, Missouri, as well as an office in Washington, D.C. The law firm specializes in representing nonprofit and tax-exempt organizations, and those who work with them in the appeal for public support.
Mr. Copilevitz first became involved with fundraising regulation in 1978 when he acted as lead counsel in a series of landmark cases surrounding charitable solicitation laws, which were litigated in the state of Ohio. The cases concluded successfully in 1987.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Mr. Copilevitz and his law firm have been at the forefront of representing the nonprofit community, challenging overreaching government regulation on First Amendment grounds. In 1988, Mr. Copilevitz represented the nonprofit industry in the landmark decision of Riley v. National Federation of the Blind of North Carolina, Inc., 487 U.S. 781(1988), which successfully challenged the state law of North Carolina regulating charitable fundraising. That same year, the major trade publication, Philanthropy Monthly, named Mr. Copilevitz “Man of the Year” for his service to the nonprofit movement. In 2003, Mr. Copilevitz again represented the nonprofit community before the U.S. Supreme Court in Madigan v. Telemarketing Associates, et al.
